Teofen Hendry said that he was “fined” by snooker bosses because of his appearance on The Masked Singer.
The 54-year-old Scottish player, who is a former world champion, appeared on the ITV celebrity singing show on Saturday as out of character nonsense.
Asked by the PA news agency what he has told people keeping his identity a secret, Hendry said: “I have had wildcards to play in some snooker events and I’ve actually been kicked out of some events and fined by the WPBSA imposed (the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association) to do so.
“And I couldn’t tell them because it was recording and I can’t say clearly why I withdrew… I just said ‘look, I can’t play the tournament’.
“So, yeah, it was very, very, very awkward … You’re dying to tell people what you’re doing but you can’t.”
The WPBSA, whose commercial arm is the World Snooker Tour, administers the rules governing snooker tournaments.
Hendry said he agreed to participate in The Masked Singer because he “loved” the show and would remain anonymous during the performance.
He said: “I’ve been asked to do other reality shows, but what appealed to me about this one was obviously the fact that you’re in a costume. No one can see you.
“And clearly (no stress) – it’s not a singing contest, it’s just a show you just go to in this costume and have fun.”
She said that before entering the show, she had only done karaoke in China, so she enlisted singing coach Mark De-Lisser to help her with her voice.
Hendry said: “(Mark) just brought it up to me, which I didn’t know was out there, so it was really incredible and amazing… I’m not saying I’m a great singer, but I’m I’m better than I thought.
“He messaged me after Saturday night and joked that a Christmas album was on the way, but, yeah, just kidding. Look, that’s not gonna happen.”
The episode involving Hendry’s unmasking drew an average of 4.3 million viewers based on overnight ratings.
According to ITV, there was a peak audience of 5.1 million viewers.
Hendry said following the disclosure, following his performance of My Old Man’s a Dustman’s classic track Ruby by Lonnie Donegan and the Kaizer Chiefs, his phone went “crazy” with messages from family and friends.
“The main theme was ‘I can’t believe you did this. I can’t believe you did this and I can’t believe you kept it quiet’,” he said.
“My son texted me and said ‘I’ve watched the show every week. I love it. I can’t believe you did this’.
“He didn’t even have a clue so the response and reaction was unbelievable.”
– The Masked Singer returns to ITV and ITVX on Saturday at 7pm.
