Sesame Street co-founder Lloyd Morrissette has died at the age of 93

Lloyd Morrissette, co-founder of the popular children’s television show Sesame Street, has died at the age of 93.

The psychologist was praised for leaving an “outstanding and indelible legacy” among generations of children around the world.

Dr Morrisett was one of the pioneers in using technology to educate, and was reportedly the first to consider using television to teach basic skills to young children.

His death was announced on Tuesday via Sesame Workshop, although no further details were given.

A statement on the organization’s Twitter page read, “Sesame Workshop mourns the passing of our respected and beloved co-founder Lloyd Ann Morissette, PhD, who passed away at the age of 93.”

“Lifetime Honorary Trustee, Lloyd has left an immense and indelible legacy among generations of children around the world, with Sesame Street the most visible tribute to a lifetime of good work and lasting impact.”

The statement continued: “An intelligent, thoughtful, and above all compassionate leader of the Workshop for decades, Lloyd was fascinated by the power of technology and was constantly thinking of new ways it could be used to educate.”

Sharing a quote from Morissette’s co-founder and close friend Joan Ganz Cooney, it states: “Without Lloyd Morissette, there would be no Sesame Street.

“It was he who first came up with the notion of using television to teach preschool children basic skills such as letters and numbers.

“He was a trusted companion and loyal friend to me for over fifty years, and he will be greatly missed.”

Sesame Street first premiered on public television stations on November 10, 1969, and continues to air today.

The news comes less than two months after the death of Bob McGrath, one of its first non-Muppet regular characters on the show, who died at the age of 90.
