Jurgen Klopp and Graham Potter looked for positivity on Saturday after Liverpool and Chelsea canceled each other out in a goalless draw.

Either team boasted good form in the Anfield competition and the game reflected their current mid-table Premier League position.

Yet with both sides avoiding the consequences of another defeat during their trial run, the managers conceded one point each.

Liverpool boss Klopp, taking charge of his 1,000th game in management, said: “I liked the start of the first half and especially the second half, so it was good and we need to extend these spells.

“We had moments when we played very well. It is clear to me that you have to be prepared to take small steps and this was a small step.

“I expect progress and from the last league game, it was definitely progress. It’s important.

“I think Arsene Wenger lost his 1,000th game 6-0, so I’m really glad it didn’t happen.”

The result leaves Liverpool with plenty of work to do to get back in the race for a top four spot.

Klopp said, ‘We can only influence it by winning and we didn’t do that.

“But there are a lot of games to play and if you count all the points, a lot is possible. To get there we have to do what we did here and I have seen the progress in the last two games.”

Chelsea thought they had taken a third-minute lead through Kai Havertz, but after a VAR check the goal was ruled out for offside and there was little clear-cut chance thereafter.

Chelsea manager Potter said: “We were delighted with the team’s performance, pleased with the energy, spirit and discipline.

“It’s never easy to come here because of the quality of Liverpool and Anfield, so we accept that, we accept it and move forward in a positive way.”

In reference to his side’s Champions League qualification chances, Potter said: “We just have to look at the next day and the next game, rather than worrying about what’s going to happen in four or five months’ time.

“The number of players we have lost is in double digits. It will affect any team but I think the team has held together under a lot of criticism, pressure and noise.

The one bright spot for Chelsea was the performance of new signing Mykhailo Mudrić, who made a lively start off the bench in the second half.

Potter said: “He was really good. He’s only been with us for a few days, but the longer he’s with us the better he gets and the more we understand him, and vice versa, but promising signs.”

“From watching him with Shekhar and seeing his quality, he is dangerous in one-v-one situations in the final third. He can do things and I think he will sweep the supporters off their feet.
